It has been a few years since Thor: Love and Thunder divided fans with Taika Waititi’s colorful comedy tone, so now we’re waiting for news of the Thor 5 release date. We need more Chris Hemsworth, and we need it now.

Thor’s fourth solo movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe had him face one of the best Marvel villains yet, Gorr the God Butcher. So he’ll have to take on someone even bigger and better this time around. He now has Gorr’s young daughter as his new superhero buddy, and we’d expect her to show up if Thor returns for upcoming Marvel movies as part of Marvel Phase 6. Here’s everything we know so far.

Thor 5 release date speculation

Thor 5 is in the works right now, according to Taika Waititi, though we don’t expect to see it until at least 2027 as it hasn’t officially been announced as part of the MCU’s Phase 6.

Waititi said in November 2023 that Chris Hemsworth is in talks for a fifth Thor movie, though he will not be returning to direct it. The filmmaker told Business Insider that he is “going to concentrate on these other films that I’ve signed on for”rather than making more of the Thor movies.

Hemsworth said he’s “completely open to it” if there’s a good story to be told, but he has also made it clear that he wants the fifth movie to round off Thor’s MCU journey. The actor has opened up about how health issues could affect his desire to continue in the role with the announcement of his genetic predisposition for Alzheimer’s disease. Family comes first for the husband and father, which we fully support.

If Thor 5 were greenlit, writers, directors, and a story would need to be fleshed out. With that in mind, the next time we see Thor, we will likely be in one of the big team-up movies on the way, like Avengers 5 or, more likely, Avengers Secret Wars.

There is a small chance that Thor 5 could be added to the MCU calendar between those two films, which are due for May 2026 and May 2027. But we think it’s more likely that Thor 5 will arrive in the aftermath of Secret Wars, whatever new shape the MCU has taken by then.

Who’s in the Thor 5 cast?

Chris Hemsworth would lead the cast of Thor 5, likely alongside Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, Jaimie Alexander as Sif, Taika Waititi as Korg, and India Hemsworth as Love.

These predictions for the Thor cast depend on whether Thor 5 continues the Love storyline established at the end of Thor 4. We think there’s a lot of potential in Chris Hemsworth and his real-life daughter India getting to explore an on-screen dynamic in a future Thor adventure.

Because of the Thor Love and Thunder post-credits scene, we’re also expecting Brett Goldstein’s Hercules to be the antagonist. His father, Zeus, tasked him with tracking Thor down and taking revenge. After all, Thor did impale Zeus with his own lightning bolt. We’d be pretty pissed, too, and if we had a super-ripped and dangerous son, we might fancy revenge as well.

According to recent rumors, Marvel is looking to go in a completely different direction for Thor 5. Both Ragnarok and Love and Thunder were outright comedies disguised as superhero movies, and the studio wants to take the God of Thunder in a darker direction.

Supposedly (and take this with a heap of salt), the studio’s first choice for director is Gareth Edwards, who previously directed Star Wars: Rogue One and, more recently, The Creator.

What will Thor 5 be about?

We know that Thor is now a stepdad, taking care of Gorr’s daughter, Love, and this could be a central part of a fifth movie.

They’re a dynamic duo that saves people around the universe who are being invaded or oppressed, which leaves plenty of space for adventure. Thor’s connection with the Guardians of the Galaxy saw him explore the cosmic side of the MCU, and we’d love to see more of that in the fifth movie.

In addition to all that, Hercules is out for blood, and he could be more than a match for Thor. Zeus has a real grudge against our God of Thunder, and he could well have the backing of some of the other gods as well.

We’ve seen Thor reckon with what it means to be a god, but now he could find himself fighting back against the gods. Thor the God Butcher? Don’t bet against it.

Is there a Thor 5 trailer?

Thor 5 won’t have a trailer until at least 2027, and it could be even later, depending on where the movie fits into the Marvel calendar.

Generally, MCU trailers arrive around six months before new movies are released. If 2027 is the earliest we could feasibly see Thor 5, then a trailer would drop shortly before its release date. Marvel will want to keep its future projects under wraps as well until we know more about what’s going to happen in the upcoming Avengers movies.
